We’re halfway through the summer and hope everyone has had a relaxing break so far. The Legacy Park Community Board has been hard at work planning the next steps and we’re excited to share what we can with you.

Explanation of Costs

It’s no secret that Legacy Park requires a lot of funding. Those keeping up with us have probably seen several numbers being mentioned (all of them with a lot of 0s). These numbers are still all estimates. We’re in the early stages of working with Eustace civil engineers to get more concrete costs based on their assessments of the space and the work that needs to be done.

Think of a kitchen renovation. First you have to do the hidden expensive items like plumbing, framing, electrical; before you can add the pretty finishes like tile and paint to make it a usable space. The same applies here. First, we need to rework the grounds before we can layer in the playground pieces and all the special touches that will make the new park come to life.

It isn’t a secret is how swampy the playground and fields get after a good rainfall. A big reason for this is the property isn’t properly graded.

Fortunately, this is fixable, at a cost of course. We expect about 66% of our budget to go towards regrading the fields and playground alone.

We are also planning to install pathway lighting and a new security surveillance system around the playground. This requires electrical conduit to be run underground and will also come at a cost.

Once the groundwork is completed, then comes the fun parts that everyone will see and actually enjoy; the equipment and landscaping! We’re looking to create four unique playspaces in addition to a walking path and a practice field.

While we are still anxiously awaiting to hear from our civil engineers what the “invisible” improvements will cost, we do hope to have some figures before the start of school in September.

Get to Know Our Board Members

Each newsletter, we’d like to introduce you further to one of our board members, this month it’s Gia!

Gia Ranson is excited to serve on the volunteer board for the community playground. As an early intervention special education teacher, she is deeply committed to supporting children and helping them reach their fullest potential. Her work with families has reinforced her appreciation for inclusive spaces, particularly those that serve the youngest members of the community.

She lives in Jenkintown with her two children—one in elementary school and the other in high school. Parenting has given her valuable insight into the importance of safe, engaging outdoor spaces where children can play, learn, and grow. She believes the playground is more than just a space for fun; it serves as a critical foundation for community bonding and healthy child development.

Gia looks forward to collaborating with fellow board members and community leaders to enhance the playground. Together, they can build a space that reflects the community’s values and supports the needs of all families. She is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to an initiative that holds deep meaning for her and her family.
